The Women's Center is proud to recognize and congratulate Ambika Ravindran for being an honoree of the League of Women Voters of the Space Coast for Women of Action on February20th 2016. Dr. Pat Manning, a Women's Center Guild member, had the pleasure of introducing her during this outstanding event. Ambika Ravindran is the founder of the Women's Center North Guild. She is a life partner of the Women's Center and an activist on behalf of the Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children, which assists homeless single mothers and their children throughout our community. Ambika is a supporter of the Brevard Schools Foundation and raised thousands of dollars for Supply Zone for Teachers. Her funding efforts helped to establish the Women's Center Ravindran Family Domestic Violence Safe House, which is named for her family. The Dr. Jey Pillai Center for Hospice Care in Rockledge, the newest facility of its kind in our area, is the result of her work and investment.

We are truly blessed to have such an outstanding community philanthropist be honored for her generous works and giving heart.

Client Story

A 25 year old woman from Australia, Karen, came to Florida on a school visa. She was befriended by a male on social media and they began talking, which eventually lead to meeting in person. During their first encounter she was taken to a remote area where he threatened her at gun point. Terrified she complied to his sexual assault to avoid being killed. When he was done with her he dropped her off at a bus stop. She boarded the bus feeling hopeless and ashamed. When she got home, she attempted suicide. After multiple unsuccessful suicide attempts, she called the Women's Center, spoke with a volunteer and was encouraged to meet with an advocate.

During her meeting with the advocate she received information on sexual assault, creating a safety plan and sexual assault support groups. The advocate set her up for counseling with our victim therapist. She went to therapy for several weeks, and after working through feelings of guilt and shame Karen felt strong enough to report the assault to law enforcement.

Two months after her assault she realized she had become pregnant from the rape. The young woman decided to keep and raise her baby. Our advocate referred her to a local pregnancy center where she received the medical help and support she needed, all the while she continued her meetings with the Women's Center's advocate and therapist.

When Karen gave birth, a DNA sample was taken to assist in the capture of her assailant. The Women's Center made arrangements for her and her son to be in a safe place. She continues her counseling for dealing with her post traumatic stress and meets periodically with the victims advocate. Through the generous donations of our supporters, the Women's Center is able to give her diapers, gift cards, baby items, formula, food, personal items, and clothing from the Furniture and More Thrift Store. Karen is extremely grateful for all the help she received when she needed it the most.

The Green Dot Strategy

The Green Dot Strategy is a partnership with The Women's Center, The Florida Department of Health and Eastern Florida State College. The Green Dot Strategy is a set of bystander interventions aimed at educating individuals to recognize high risk situations that may result in sexual violence. The goal is to teach bystanders skills to assess situations and speak up in a safe and effective manner. These skills will be taught in a series of focus groups, face-to-face meetings, overview speeches and bystander trainings at all four Brevard County of Eastern Florida State College.

Lori Sutherland is the Green Dot Strategy Coordinator and Jenny Crespo will be assisting as Green Dot Strategy Facilitator.

A Green Dot is a small moment when someone makes the choice to use their words or behaviors to stop a red dot, a single choice someone makes to use his or her words, choices, actions or behaviors to hurt someone else. What's your Green Dot?
